ABOUT Arianna Selagea
DEGREES:
M.S. in Biomedical Visualization, University of Illinois at Chicago B.S. in Biology: Pre-Physician’s Assistant, Trinity International University
BIO:
I am a medical illustrator passionate about creating visualizations that can be used to promote better health communication and outcomes in the world. I was always drawn towards the field of medicine and was excited to find a niche where I could use my visualization skills in the medical field to promote health communication, patient care, and education. By obtaining a Master of Science in Biomedical Visualization at UIC, I have learned visualization techniques in various software, fruitful collaboration tactics, design strategies for targeted audiences, and the importance of proper research as the foundation of every piece. With my training and ambition to understand exactly how biological, molecular, and anatomical structures function and relate to each other, I believe my visualizations can be used to communicate complex physiological processes for different types of audiences.
My education was greatly enhanced by the research I conducted at UIC - I explored the use of drawing to help teach important health topics to low-literacy populations in Lagos, Nigeria. This experience was enlightening and rewarding, and I would like to continue reaching towards low-literacy populations through my illustrations to help increase health awareness and decision-making towards improved health. Check out my research page to find out more about it!
Alongside this, I found I greatly enjoy observing innovative medical/surgical procedures and depicting them to help medical students learn faster, as well as creating editorial artwork that inspires emotion and interest in biomedical topics. Following my interest in surgery specifically, I began working in the field of virtual reality to create simulations of surgical procedures, and I immensely enjoy the combination of art, gaming, and medicine/science that allows me to bring these educational modules to life.
Obtained Board Certification of Medical Illustrators in March of 2023.
