This mock editorial piece aims to communicate the importance of context, inspired by an article entitled, “Genomic Contextualism - Shifting the Rhetoric of Genetic Exceptionalism” (Garrison, Brothers, Goldenberg, & Lynch, 2019). What does a cake illustration have to do with genetics? In her article, Garrison and colleagues argue the importance of context in determining how genomic information of individuals is treated, in order to help resolve policy debates around the issue. You wouldn’t treat a piece of cake on a dirty trash can lid the same way you would a piece on a clean plate even though they were extracted from the same cake, now would you?

I had great fun with this piece and was inspired to implement a style and color palette after Edwin Georgi, a talented American artist who had great success in illustrating for advertisements. Through all this I learned how to best tackle the challenge of conceptualizing an editorial cover and the importance of finding inspirational artists to learn from through their style and technique.
